About this work
Allegory of the triumph of Liberty and Equality over Ambition, 1795. Equality sits on a dais before an obelisk (crowned by the All-Seeing Eye), her hand resting on the book of the Rights of Man. In the foreground stadtholder William V, a supplicating king and the severed head of Louis XVI. To the rear left the French army drives off the enemy, to the rear right naked children dance around a liberty tree and a sunrise.
