About this work

Allegory on the marriage of William III and Mary Stuart, 14 November 1677. William III as a Roman general extends his hand to Mary before a burning altar at a pillar with a bust of Hercules; here also the Dutch Maiden with the liberty cap and seven arrows. On the right side, some opponents of the marriage, including a bishop and the personification of Slander or Gossip, with French characteristics. Below, an open space, probably intended for the almanac of 1678. At the bottom, a depiction of the wedding ceremony at Whitehall.
