About this work
The men in Western clothing are part of the embassy of the States General, led by Cornelis Pijnacker. Pijnacker was sent on this diplomatic mission to reduce the nuisance the Republic had from Algerian pirates and to free Dutch enslaved captives (Christian slaves).
