About this work
The men in Western dress are part of the embassy of the States General, led by Cornelis Pijnacker. Pijnacker was sent on this diplomatic mission to reduce the nuisance the Republic suffered from the Algerian corsairs and to free Dutch enslaved prisoners (Christian slaves).
