About this work
Anti-Catholic caricature. A Lutheran shepherd Johan kills a monk disguised as a devil and drives away the angel, 1676. Night scene with a shepherd who with his staff strikes down a man disguised as a devil, to the right an angel is driven away by the shepherd's dog. According to the caption it happened outside Isenborg near Halberstadt. The print can be interpreted as an allegory in relation to the Amsterdam Lutheran minister Volckard Visscher or as an allegory in favor of Balthasar Bekker and his ideas. Below the plate a verse in 2 columns in a kind of pseudo-German.
