About this work
Anti-Catholic satirical print. A Lutheran shepherd named Johan kills a monk disguised as a devil and drives away the angel, 1693. Night scene with a shepherd striking down a man disguised as a devil with his staff; on the right, an angel is driven away by the shepherd's dog. According to the caption, this occurred outside Isenborg near Halberstadt. The print can be interpreted as an allegory on the discussion in the Lutheran congregation in Amsterdam or as an allegory in favor of Balthasar Bekker and his ideas. Below the plate, a verse in two columns in German.
