The French Shrove Tuesday, ca. 1701-1713

The French Carnival. Allegory on the dragonnades in France under King Louis XIV. On the left, the virtues are driven away by Jesuits, they flee to a temple (the Republic) where they are welcomed. Centrally the bloodletting of France, the blood is licked up by dogs. On the right Mars with a wooden leg followed by Death, poverty, widows and orphans. On the sheet below the print a conversation between a Swede and a Dane in Dutch and French. Part of a group of separate satirical prints on Louis XIV during the War of the Spanish Succession, ca. 1701-1713.
