About this work

Satirical print on the dispute between the States-General and the German Emperor Joseph II over the right to free navigation on the Scheldt. The Scheldt Maiden is attacked by an Austrian officer; on the right the Dutch Citizen warns the Emperor who has torn up treaties, with the Russian Empress Catherine and an ape wearing an imperial crown. In the background the incident with the imperial brig Louis and the Dutch schooner Dolphijn on 8 October 1784. Below the print on the sheet an explanation of the numbers 1-10 in the scene.
