About this work

Linen damask napkin with the history of Susanna. Central field: the symmetrical doubled pattern shows three scenes from bottom to top: 1 Susanna in the Bath (Halved). 2 False Testimony of the Elders. Before a court, in the center, stands Susanna with uncovered head, a ruff around the neck, puffed sleeves, and a wide farthingale skirt. The two elders, one the mirror image of the other, lay a hand on her head. 3 The Judgment of Daniel. On a judge's chair with the inscription DANIEL sits a man who had separately asked the elders under which tree they had seen Susanna. Standing borders: single vine with flowers and birds.
