Strip of needle lace with standing oval medallions in a rich pattern of floral garlands

Japanese strip of natural-colored needle lace: Alençon lace. The repeating pattern consists of standing oval medallions within a rich pattern of flower scrolls. One medallion stands beneath each crest of the scroll along the upper edge of the strip, accompanied by fine leaves and orange blossoms. Luxuriant scrolls bearing roses, anemones, and forget-me-nots hang over these scrolls, seemingly passing through the medallions, cutting across their edges, and forming part of the pattern at the lower edge of the strip. The flowers decrease in size towards the bottom. The scalloped edge is further supplemented by a scroll of roses. The motifs are executed in buttonhole stitches with cutouts and decorative stitches. The motifs feature relief contours. The motifs are connected by a hexagonal mesh ground with twisted mesh sides. Numerous decorative stitches, including flower hearts and the decorative frames of the medallions, mainly wheel picots.
