Strip of bobbin lace with bouquet in cartouche

Strip of natural-coloured bobbin lace: old Brabant lace. The strip is presumably for a rochet, that is a surplice that falls to the knee and is worn over a cassock. The pattern consists of two different cartouches with alternating a bouquet of three flowers and a bouquet of five flowers. The motifs are connected by a lattice ground, the Paris ground. The full work is largely made in openwork linen stitch with openwork edges and/or with bobbin-relief contours. Parts of motifs, including the flower hearts, are made in net stitch. As a decorative ground a plait ground with picots has been applied in the frames and between the flowers among others. The upper side of the strip is finished with a separately bobbin-edged band. The scalloped lower side results from the pattern and is finished with picots.
