About this work
High hat, claque, of black grosgrain silk, mourning hat (?). Stiff brim and crown, limp silk with inner feather. The cylindrical crown has slightly hollow sides and an elliptical cross-section. Arched brim, side narrower than front, with a turned-in edge. Interior entirely of grosgrain silk. Address: gold stamp with monogram J C within a crowned garter, upon which l'union fait la force/BRUXELLES. In a flat arched box lined with black paper with gold edging, copper handle on the side.
