About this work

Cast-iron fireback with three semicircles at the top. In the center is a depiction of the capture of the Spanish silver fleet by Piet Hein, with several ships at sea and land with a few trees in the background. In the left semicircle, the bust of Admiral-General Piet Hein, and in the right semicircle, the bust of Admiral Hendrick Loncq. In the central semicircle, presumably a second image of Piet Hein with the inscription ANNO 1630. The top is finished with several French lilies. Between the ships, the inscription: BAY D. MATANSE. The plate is marked with the initials GS.
