Strip of bobbin lace with omega-shaped ornamental band crossed by a plume and peonies

Strip of natural-colored bobbin lace: Mechelen lace. The repeating and continuous pattern consists of a decorative band in the shape of the Greek capital letter omega. This is cut through on one side by a plume hanging diagonally downwards and from the top by a lush leaf from which two peonies spring. The plume that cuts through the subsequent omega springs from the upper of these peonies. The motifs are connected by a fine mesh ground. The motifs are made in linen stitch with few cutouts but with openwork edges. In for example the decorative band and the three oval medallions in the plume the full work is made in mesh stitch. Around the motifs contour lines are applied with slightly thicker and shiny thread. In remaining spaces between leaves and flowers a decorative ground is applied, a snowflake ground. The shallow scalloped underside results from the pattern and is finished with picots. The top is finished straight.
