Two Sinhalese tillers

Two men stand outdoors in an open field. They stand upright, each with a hoe (udalla) on a long staff. Both wear only a small loincloth (lanket, lunket) covering the crotch and leaving the buttocks bare. The long wavy hair of both men hangs loose over the shoulders. The man on the left has the hoe standing beside him on the ground. With his right hand he holds the staff; the left arm hangs relaxed at his side. The man on the right – possibly the same figure – has the hoe standing behind him. These man(n) are Ceylonese farmers belonging to the Goviya caste. They are clearly posing for the draughtsman with the tool used to make the ridges in a rice field. Page 29 from a sketchbook with 117 pages.
