Two Sinhalese tillers

Two men stand outdoors at the edge of an open field. Each stands with a hoe (udalla) on a long staff. Both wear only a small loincloth (lanket, lunket) covering the crotch and leaving the buttocks bare. Here it is clearly visible how the cloth is pulled between the legs and tucked in behind the fabric at the back. The long wavy hair of both men hangs loose over the shoulders. Both drawn men may be the same figure. These man(n) are Ceylonese farmers belonging to the Goviya caste. They are clearly posing for the draughtsman with the tool used to make the ridges in a rice field. The rice field in which they work may be visible in the background.
