About this work
Two possibly Tamil women of low caste from Jaffna, standing outdoors side by side with a wicker basket in their right hand. Both wear a South Indian wrap cloth (selai or sari) fastened at the waist, the end of which is draped over the back and shoulder and covers the upper body. Both women have their long hair parted in the middle and pinned back in a bun (condé). Their earlobes are pierced and stretched. The woman on the left and the woman on the right may be the same woman, but drawn twice in different positions. Leaf 38 from a sketchbook with 117 leaves.
