Man and woman

Outside along a road, on the left stands a man dressed in a hip cloth (veshti, lungi) folded up to his knees, tucked at the waist. On his left shoulder he carries an earthenware water jug (kalaya), and in his right hand a cylindrical earthenware pot (maatbeker and lid for the jug); his hair is parted in the middle and possibly pinned up at the back. On the right stands a woman; she wears a wrap skirt in Sinhalese style (redda), with pleats tucked straight at the waist; a wide Portuguese blouse with a V-neck and long sleeves (hatte). On her head a carrying ring with a woven mat, and above that a basket with stacked earthenware bowls (hatti), two of which are visible. With her right hand she balances the stack; in her left hand she holds a similar empty earthenware bowl. In these bowls (kiri hatti) the traditional yogurt (kiri or in English 'curd') was and is made and offered for sale. Page 51 from a sketchbook with 117 pages.
