About this work

The hilt is chased with Classical warriors and a woman; at the bottom of the knuckle bow is a depiction of Susanna and the Elders and Saint George and the Dragon, on top an unidentified scene from the Bible or mythology with a seated man and woman; the wooden grip is wrapped with iron wire, probably once blackened, and has braided grip rings at the bottom and top. The double-edged blade has a hexagonal cross-section transitioning to a diamond shape and is etched with leafy vines and a man's head under a flowering branch with an arm emerging from a cloud holding a curved sword under the inscription Soli deo gloria.
