Model of a Double Capstan

Model of a double capstan in a wooden frame with three levels. The upper drum is for ten windlasses with ten spindle clamps, the lower for eight windlasses with eight spindle clamps; two pawls in the floor prevent backsliding of the upper drum, one for each direction of rotation. The floor around the foot of the lower drum is provided with an inclined plane; around the foot of the drum is a ring on wheels to reduce friction. This arrangement ensures that the line on the drum shifts; to demonstrate its operation, a guide for a rope is attached to one side of the middle deck. The wooden king rotates with a point on a track on the lowest level and is provided with another ring with wheels that runs against the ceiling of the lower level to prevent the king from rising.
