Model of a Double Capstan

Model of a double capstan in a wooden frame representing two decks. Both capstans are for twelve windlasses and have six teeth. The lower drum has eight pawls in the foot to prevent backsliding. The drums can be used in four ways: blocked, separately, coupled, and combined so that the upper drives the lower with a delay. The combinations are obtained with pawls in the foot of the lower drum, with which the gearing consisting of sun-and-planet gears, placed under the lower deck between the beams, can be activated, and by coupling or decoupling the kings of both drums with a mechanism on the head of the lower capstan, which is now incomplete.
