About this work

Young woman from Lyon dressed in a dress of taffeta, called 'costume à la Piémontoise', trimmed with gathered strips of the same fabric. The hairstyle is à l'Asirienne and is also called "l'Herisson". It is decorated with a ribbon, braided with a beaded necklace (pearl necklace) and crowned with a feather with diamond agrafe (pin). Around the neck a fichu, at the waist chatelaines, one with a pocket watch. Further accessories: bracelet, bow at the décolleté, shoes with buckles and contrasting heels. According to the caption, this fashion originated in 1775 in the theater of Lyon during the stay of Madame Clotilde of France, Princess of Piedmont, to whom the costume owes its name.
