Reuben

Reuben, the first son of Jacob. A pig stands next to him, symbol for the unchastity that characterized Reuben by having intercourse with the concubine of his father. Reuben points to the statues of Venus and Cupid, the gods of love and lust in the Roman pantheon. Together they form a fountain. The relief on the water basin of the fountain shows Reuben together with the concubine. All these attributes refer to Jacob's blessing of Reuben in Genesis 49. The print is part of a series on the twelve sons of Jacob and patriarchs of Israel and has a Dutch and Latin inscription.
