Sheet with four oval scenes, each with inscription and date in Latin: top left Saint Candida of Carthage being beaten with bundles of twigs, top right the apostle Matthew with a little angel, bottom left Saint Iphigeneia of Africa being baptized by the apostle Matthew, bottom right Saint Maurice of Agaunum as an officer of an army (the Theban Legion). This print is part of a series of prints depicting the saints and the Christian feast days of the year. Four scenes from one plate are printed on each sheet. Including the corresponding title page and frontispiece, the series comprises 124 plates (490 depictions). The three plates with the last 12 scenes (the moveable Christian feast days) were cut down in the third state to 12 small prints and issued with a separate title page.
