About this work

Sheet with four oval scenes, each with inscription and date in Latin: top left Saint Edmund of East Anglia who is shot dead with a firearm, top right Mary ascending the steps to the temple, bottom left Saint Columbanus of Bobbio surrounded by hungry foxes, bottom right Saint Cecilia of Rome at an organ. This print is part of a series of prints depicting the saints and the Christian feast days of the year. Four scenes from one plate are printed on each sheet. Including the corresponding title page and frontispiece, the series comprises 124 plates (490 scenes). The three plates with the last 12 scenes (the moveable Christian feast days) were cut down in the third state to 12 small prints, and issued with a separate title page.
