About this work
Allegorical representation of the alliance between the Netherlands and France, 1795. In the center, the Maidens of the French and Batavian Republics reach each other above an altar a hand through a snake ring, held by a winged Liberty. The whole is illuminated by light from a sun with the Tetragrammaton. Above Liberty flies a putto with a palm branch. To the left, tyranny is driven away before a burning castle; to the right, ships are visible symbolizing the revived sea trade.
