About this work
A soldier on guard, full-length, facing right, holding a matchlock musket (a specific type of firearm) with his left hand. The burning match lies on the cock (part of the ignition mechanism) of his musket. With his index and middle fingers of his right hand, he covers the pan (the powder reservoir) of his musket to protect the powder from sparks from the match. This print is part of the series of 42 numbered prints of matchlock musketeers from the Wapenhandelinghe.
