About this work

The digging up of the ramparts by the Antwerpers, 23 August 1577. Procession of armed inhabitants of Antwerp with shovels and baskets on their way to the citadel. In the background the demolition and digging up of the fortress. Representation in a round medallion with ornamental allegorical frame with the seated female personifications of Diligence (Vlijt) and Liberty (Vrijheid) at the top. At the bottom a cartouche with 2 verses of 6 lines each in French and Dutch.
