About this work

The digging up of the bastions by the Antwerp citizens, 23 August 1577. Procession of inhabitants of Antwerp armed with spades and baskets on their way to the citadel. In the background, the demolition and digging up of the fortress. Depiction in a round medallion with an ornamental allegorical frame, with the seated female personifications of Diligentia (Diligence) and Libertas (Liberty) at the top. At the bottom, a cartouche with two verses of six lines each in French and Dutch.
