About this work

The digging of the ramparts by the Antwerp citizens, 23 August 1577. A procession of Antwerp residents armed with shovels and baskets heading toward the citadel. In the background, the demolition and digging of the fortress. Depicted in a round medallion with an ornamental allegorical frame, with the seated female personifications of Diligence (Diligentia) and Liberty (Libertas) at the top. At the bottom, a cartouche with two verses of six lines each in French and Dutch.
