About this work

Allegory of Unity Achieved at the First Great Assembly of the States-General, held in the Ridderzaal from 18 to 21 January 1651. The assembly was convened after the death of Prince William II on 6 November 1650. On an altar, two soldiers bind seven arrows into a bundle. Surrounding them are the maidens of the eight provinces: Gelderland, Friesland, Utrecht, Holland, Overijssel, Zeeland, Zutphen, and Groningen. In the sky, putti hold wreaths and a trumpet of peace. In the foreground, Discord is imprisoned in a dungeon. Below the plate, a two-column verse is printed on the sheet.
