About this work

Emblematic print on the Peace of Nijmegen concluded between the Republic and France on 10 August 1678. Prudence (Prudentia), Reason (Ratio) and Time (Tempus) forge the weapons of war into plowshares and other tools. Violence (Violentia) operates the bellows of the oven. In the sky Peace (Pax) and Justice (Justitia). In and below the image inscriptions and verses in Dutch, Latin and French. The print was originally made for the occasion of the Eternal Edict in 1577 and earlier also adapted to serve as an allegory on the Peace of Münster in 1648.
