According to the accompanying text, the man is fashionable with his reddish-brown frock coat, a color that is in fashion in the autumn of 1786. The coat has a lining of the same color and the edges are finished with white binding 'formant le passe-poil' (the latter is considered a refined modernity: Marie-Jes: help...what is exactly meant here?) With mother-of-pearl buttons. Pink gilet and culotte of Casimir. Gray silk stockings and shoes with buckles. Two watches on his.... Gloves of chamois; walking stick of bamboo.
