Strip of bobbin lace with various flowers and arches

Strip of natural-coloured bobbin lace: Brabant lace. It concerns two sewn-together cuffs of a surplice. The repeating pattern consists of a great variety of flowers and leaves tumbling over each other. Notable are the thick leaves or C-scrolls, which form arches around the central axis at some distance from each other. Under each arch is a similar composition with an oval (cup) flower on a slightly curved stem. The fields between the arches are filled in an alternating manner, among others with a U-shaped frame in which eight rosette flowers form a circle, crowned by a composition with C-scrolls and ovals. The motifs are made in net stitch and linen stitch with openwork edges and cut-outs. Contour threads have been used very sparingly to accentuate some motif parts. The motifs are largely connected by a lattice ground, a Paris ground. The motifs under the arches are connected by a picoted plait ground.
