In a room with stark white walls, an Eurasian woman sits on a wooden armchair to the left. She wears a long wrap-skirt (redda) of fabric with a floral or polka-dot pattern, tucked at the waist in the Sinhalese manner, over a wide Portuguese blouse (hatte) with long sleeves. Her hair, parted in the middle, is combed tightly back into a bun (condé). She wears Portuguese slippers. The chair is a simple Portuguese model with a woven rattan seat and back; it appears to be a rocking chair. On the left armrest of the chair lies a possibly tin, round shallow bowl with a high rim, containing two betel leaves and an areca nut.
