Two labourers

Two men outside in uneven terrain. The standing man on the left hides his feet behind a pile of earth. He is dressed in a knee-length hip-cloth (veshti, lungi) tied high around the waist. Around his head he has draped a shoulder cloth (chadar) that covers his back and shoulders, the end of which he has also tucked into his waist. The upper body is otherwise uncovered. He holds his bare arms folded in front of his stomach. The man on the right sits crouching on a sloping bank. He also wears a hip-cloth reaching over his knees and a shoulder cloth draped over his shoulders, upper body, and head. Only his feet and face are uncovered. In front of him stands a kind of sliding box in which two objects lie. The men are probably from South India and employed in Colombo in the reconstruction. Sheet 41 from a sketchbook with 117 sheets.
