Model of a Capstan with a Winch

Model of a capstan on a wooden floor. It is a windlass for eight windlasses with a winch in the head and four pawls in the heel to prevent backsliding. To use the winch, the head with the small brass cover plate is locked to the fixed king, which has a square heel set into the reinforced floor. The drum is fitted with a toothed wheel under the head, driven by two handspikes with roundels in the head; thus the drum rotates under the head. The handspikes can be disengaged with wedges. To use the windlass with windlasses, the cover plate is removed and the head is attached to the drum with two keys, so that the head and drum rotate together around the king. The drum has six clamps.
