About this work

Sheet with four oval scenes, each with inscription and date in Latin: top left Saint Christina of Bolsena being shot at by archers, top right the apostle Saint James the Greater with a staff next to Saint Christopher with the Christ Child on his shoulders, bottom left Saint Anna sitting on a chair with the little Mary at her knees, bottom right the Seven Sleepers of Ephesus lying in a cave. This print is part of a series of prints depicting the saints and the Christian feast days of the year. Four scenes from one plate are printed on each sheet. Including the corresponding title page and frontispiece, the series comprises 124 plates (490 depictions). The three plates with the last 12 scenes (the moveable Christian feast days) were cut down in the third state to 12 small prints and issued with a separate title page.
