About this work

Naval battle at the Downs between the Spanish fleet under the command of Antonio de Oquendo and the States fleet under Maarten Harpertsz. Tromp, 21 October 1639. In the foreground, seen from the stern, the admiral's ship of Tromp the Aemilia (Amelia) next to the Santa Teresa which is on fire. In the background the English coast between Romney and Dover. The left plate in an unmounted ensemble consisting of a large representation in two plates and two text sheets.
