Handkerchief with a Border of Needle Lace with Cupids

Handkerchief with a border of natural-coloured needle lace: Brussels gauze lace. Around a round batiste center runs a broad border of lace with an almost symmetrical pattern. In a circle stand sixteen openwork pointed ovals on an extremely fine ground covered with mosques. Along the sides runs a broad, bracket-shaped branch, originating from a motif shaped like a French lily, which cuts through the circle of the batiste. The branches turn into a circular shell border of palmette flowers. In the corners stand outside this circle large pointed shells enclosed by two tassel ornaments. In one of the corners stands an oval shield with a T, enclosed by a scrollwork cartouche and surmounted by a crown. To the left stands a winged amor with an arrow in the raised hand, the point of which is directed downwards and which continues upwards into a vine and a torch. In the other corners stands an amor climbing in an asymmetrical spiral vine.
