About this work

Folding fan with a paper leaf depicting a marriage proposal, on a mount of carved ivory with métal en quatre couleurs and painted medallions. The leaf is divided into three panels with a rectangular central cartouche flanked by two oval medallions. To the left of a marriage altar bearing a shield with two burning hearts and upon which a fire burns, stand a man and a woman in classicist attire. He with Roman sandals, a puffed breeches over which a tunic and a flowing shawl. She with a leaf garland in short curly hair, a long white tunic, a shawl and bare feet in Roman sandals. Above the altar floats Juno with the peacock on a cloud and to the right of the altar stands Amor. In the ovals on either side a putto on a cloud with on the left a flower garland and on the right an arrow in hand. The whole is surrounded by multicoloured flower garlands. On the back of the leaf in the middle a tuft of roses.
